You'll cut down the pollutants, not just the weeds.

  • For every gasoline-powered lawn mower or trimmer that is permanently recycled, about 70 pounds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are prevented from entering the air during the hottest summer months (June through August).
  • VOCs combine with other pollutants in the atmosphere under heat and sunlight to form ground-level ozone pollution.
  • At ground level, ozone pollution is harmful to all of us, especially the young and elderly. Ozone can also trigger attacks and symptoms in individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma or other respiratory infections. High levels of ozone pollution often affect healthy people who work or exercise outdoors and can cause breathing difficulties, eye irritation and reduced resistance to lung infections and colds with exposure for prolonged periods.

How to recycle your old equipment and fuel.
Now that you've moved on to more earth-friendly alternatives, it's important to permanently recycle your gasoline-powered lawn mower and residual oil and gasoline. Below* is a list of cities, counties and businesses that have programs to recycle your old equipment. This is not an exhaustive list, so contact your local city, county or health department to find out about recycling options available to you.
