About the RAQC
The Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC) was established in 1989 to serve as the lead air quality planning agency for the Denver metropolitan area. In April 2009, Governor Bill Ritter Jr. reauthorized the RAQC and enhanced the Council’s composition and mission to fulfill its air quality planning responsibilities.
The mission of the Regional Air Quality Council is to develop efficient and cost-effective air quality planning initiatives with input from local governments, the private sector, stakeholder groups and citizens of the Denver metropolitan region. Its primary tasks include preparing state implementation plans for compliance with federal air quality standards and developing and administering various programs regarding air quality and air pollution prevention and control in the Denver metropolitan area. The RAQC’s charges encompass public outreach and education programs with a particular focus on reducing emissions from mobile sources and the transportation sector.
About Ozone Aware
During the summer, the Regional Air Quality Council, along with state and local governments, business partners, and citizens, work together to increase awareness and educate residents about ground-level ozone. The theme of the campaign is: Let’s take care of our summer air.
Increased public understanding and awareness of the causes and solutions for ozone pollution is an important element of the RAQC’s overall ozone reduction strategy along the Front Range.
Between June 1 and August 31, the RAQC works with meteorologists from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to issue daily advisories that indicate whether eight-hour ozone levels are elevated. The advisories are issued to the media, local governments, businesses and citizens and encourage the public and businesses to reduce ozone-causing activities.

The educational campaign also includes television, radio, print and outdoor advertising, in addition to events and outreach to media and local governments.
RAQC Staff Bios
Ken Lloyd – Executive Director
Ken Lloyd has been executive director of the Regional Air Quality Council since January 1990. As the first employee of the RAQC, Ken was responsible for working with the Board to establish the organization and its functions and procedures. Ken manages the staff of the Council and provides oversight and direction for the Council's work program to analyze air quality issues and develop strategies to improve the region's air quality.
Prior to joining the RAQC, Ken spent 16 years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The first six years were spent as an economist with EPA's national air programs office in North Carolina, and the next 10 years were spent in EPA's regional office in Denver in several staff and management functions. Included were special assignments with the State of Utah and in the EPA Administrator's Office in Washington, D.C.
Ken has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics, with a minor in environmental planning, from North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
Meg Alderton – Communications Manager
Meg Alderton joined the RAQC in March of 2012 and serves as the communications manager. Meg manages the organization’s external communications and community relations, oversees development activities, serves as liaison to the public, local governments, businesses and media and manages the budget and day-to-day activities of the RAQC's comprehensive ozone education and outreach program. Meg also works with the RAQC staff to coordinate communication and outreach efforts for the RAQC’s numerous programs and efforts.
