Mow Down Pollution "Virtual" Event

Let's Mow Down Pollution. Here's all the fuel you need.

(open to all Colorado residents)

Welcome to the Regional Air Quality Council's Mow Down Pollution virtual event. We invite you to select earth-friendly lawn products and services at a discount through this site. In addition to great savings, the RAQC will provide you with a cash rebate (see table below) if you purchase equipment or choose to use an earth-friendly lawn service. You must be a Colorado resident to participate in this event. Discounted equipment and services will be available for purchase through August 31, 2008 or while supplies and funding last. Requests for rebates and supporting documentation must be received by September 14, 2008.

Start your engines. Find better, earth-friendly equipment here.

Here's our Online Buyer's Guide to Environmentally Friendly Lawn Equipment. It's a clearinghouse of information on alternative lawn equipment, products and services. Compare the products and services and select the perfect ones for you.

As summer approaches, new products, services and discounts will be added to this program. Be sure to check back here periodically!

Steps to participation:

  1. Recycle your gasoline mower and ask for a receipt. Free drop off of lawn mower with fuel undrained: www.unwanted.com. Other Mower/Fuel Recycling Contacts (PDF).

Mail-in rebates will be processed and mailed out within six to eight weeks of arrival. See below to determine your rebate.

Rebate Structure:

Neuton

  • send a copy of your sales receipt from Neuton along with proof that you recycled your gasoline mower and receive $50
  • send a copy of your sales receipt from Neuton only and receive $25

Clean Air Lawn Care

  • send a copy of your sales receipt from Clean Air Lawn Care and receive $20

You'll cut down the pollutants, not just the weeds.

  • For every gasoline-powered lawn mower or trimmer that is permanently recycled, about 70 pounds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are prevented from entering the air during the hottest summer months (June through August).
  • VOCs combine with other pollutants in the atmosphere under heat and sunlight to form ground-level ozone pollution.
  • At ground level, ozone pollution is harmful to all of us, especially the young and elderly. Ozone can also trigger attacks and symptoms in individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma or other respiratory infections. High levels of ozone pollution often affect healthy people who work or exercise outdoors and can cause breathing difficulties, eye irritation and reduced resistance to lung infections and colds with exposure for prolonged periods.

How to recycle your old equipment and fuel.

Now that you've moved on to more earth-friendly alternatives, it's important to permanently recycle your gasoline-powered lawn mower and residual oil and gasoline. Below* is a list of cities, counties and businesses that have programs to recycle your old equipment. This is not an exhaustive list, so contact your local city, county or health department to find out about recycling options available to you.
